January, 1999
Dear Volunteers Of The InfoMed Project,

We are coming to the end of our fourth year of support for the public health system of Cuba, a health care system that is demonstrably superior to any other in the Third World, and superior to many in the so-called developed world.

Before enumerating our goals for 1998, as well as our actual achievements, we should take the opportunity to report on the significance and meaning of our work. During the visit of our delegation to the InfoMed Project in Havana this past October, we were informed in no uncertain terms that USA/Cuba InfoMed, was the only source of personal computer equipment being donated to the Ministry's InfoMed network. Other sources (European nations) were insignificant in comparison to our own small group of volunteers!

This USA/InfoMed project is our way of breaking the blockade, defending Cuba's public health achievements and benefiting people all over the world who are the recipients of Cuba's knowledge, professionalism and advances in the sphere of public health.

To date, we had shipped about 800 PCs to Cuba. After another year of hard work we have amassed almost 700 additional systems, well beyond our target of 500 for 1998. There remains one final, and all-important task to complete: shipping the material to the Ministry.

That job is one that will require all of the human resources that we can muster. It will require the assembly of almost 40 cargo pallets to load into two ocean-going cargo containers. Assembling the materiel onto the wooden pallets requires much labor and care. We are appealing to each of you to take the time and effort to ensure the success of our year's work. Of course, we will continue to accept computer donations and do the usual checkout/repair work necessary. But the emphasis will be packaging.

If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, we invite you to participate in our work sessions -- diagnosing, repairing and packaging computer equipment

This is, then, an appeal to each of you to extend yourself once again to ensure that all of our work to acquire and repair that computer equipment will come to completion in the form of two cargo containers packed with 700 computer systems, ready to ship to Cuba in mid-February.

Please call Don Hill or Dave Wald to schedule a work session.

In solidarity with the people of Cuba,

Dave Wald (408) 243-4359, Email: david@cubasolidarity.net
