1999 USA/Cuba InfoMed Update
On Saturday March 6, 1999 USA Cuba InfoMed participated in the U.C. Berkeley Conference: "Race for Justice". In this conference to support justice for American political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal, USA/Cuba InfoMed organized the workshop "Mumia Abu-Jamal, Assata Shakur, and the Cuban Doctors in Africa: How does it all relate?" with a panel consisting of David Wald, Juan Reardon and Walter Turner.
On March 2, 1999, USA/Cuba InfoMed , with the support of 16 members of Congress, secured its right to ship 1,500 computers to the Cuban Government (Ministry of Public Health) for distribution to hospitals and clinics of the nation island.
The 500 computers collected during 1998 could now be shipped !
Also in May of 1999, USA/Cuba InfoMed sponsored a visit to the San Francisco Bay Area and participation in the LinuxWorld conference of Valentin Gonzalez and Rene Villalon, of Cuba's INFOMED.. Valentin and Rene also had an opportunity to visit IGC site in Mountain View to learn about this network.
The story of USA/Cuba InfoMed and its support for Cuba INFOMED was featured by CNN on national television in late April/early May. As a result, a national and well recognized medical institution expressed interest in donating to Cuba's hospitals and clinics many first generation Pentium computers which are been replaced by more state of the art computers.
This generous offer prompted USA/Cuba InfoMed to initiate the request of a license to send these Pentium computers, given that the license USA/Cuba InfoMed has does not include for Pentium computers.
In addition to the 500 computers collected during 1998 USA/Cuba InfoMed is committed to collect and send to Cuba an additional 500 computers by the end of 1999, and sometime during the year 2000 we will reached the goal of having sent a total of 2,000 computers to Cuban hospitals and clinics. We are currently only accepting computers that are 486's or better.
We also need modems and network equipment. We need volunteers for work on Saturdays and other days. Stay toned, the best is still to come!
